How to open PowerShell in Windows

Learn how to open PowerShell with administrative privileges in Windows.

[Solution 1] Use the Start Menu


  1. Right-click on the Start Menu and select PowerShell (Admin).
  2. This option is usually not available in Windows 8.

[Solution 2] Use the Search panel


  1. Open the Start Menu and click on the search bar.
  2. Search for PowerShell, right-click on the Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.

[Solution 3] Use the File Explorer


  1. Open the Windows Explorer and browse to C: \Windows \System32 \WindowsPowerShell \v1.0.
  2. Right-click on the PowerShell icon and select Run as administrator.

[Solution 4] Use the Task Manager


  1. Open the Task Manager with the CTRL + ALT + DEL keys.
  2. Open File and click Run new task.
  3. Type PowerShell and check the Create this task with administrative privileges option.
  4. Click OK to launch PowerShell.

[Solution 5] Use the Windows Explorer


  1. Open the Windows Explorer and click Documents.
  2. Open File and click Open Windows PowerShell.
  3. Click Open Windows PowerShell as administrator.
