How to refresh / reset the Windows 10 installation

Windows 10 has a new built-in feature to reinstall Windows 10 without the use of installation media. You can either choose to keep or remove all personal files during this process.

[Solution 1] Refresh or reset with the Settings app


  1. Open the Settings app and click Update & Security.
  2. Open Recovery and click Get started under Reset this PC.
  3. Choose either Keep my files or Remove everything.
  4. Click Reset to begin with the reinstallation.
  5. The computer might restart a few times during the reinstallation.

[Solution 2] Refresh or reset with the Recovery Environment


  1. Open the Windows Recovery Environment.
  2. Click Troubleshoot and select Reset this PC.
  3. Choose either Keep my files or Remove everything.
  4. Select an administrator account from the list and fill in the password.
  5. Click Reset to begin with the reinstallation.
  6. The computer might restart a few times during the reinstallation.
