Mac: Office installation hangs at verifying the file

Software: Office 2011 & 2016 | Last modified on 2018-06-18

When attempting to install Office 2011 or 2016, the installation is stuck at verifying the installation file. This is often caused by a security setting within OS X. Ensure that OS X is up to date before attempting any of the solutions below.

[Solution 1] Allow apps downloaded from anywhere

  1. Click the Apple logo located at the left top corner of the screen.
  2. Open System Preferences and click Security and Privacy.
  3. Click on the lock at the bottom and sign in with your password.
  4. Select Anywhere under Allow apps downloaded from.
  5. Restart the Mac and attempt to install Office again.
  6. Restore Allow apps downloaded from to Mac App Store and identified developers after the Office installation is successful.

[Solution 2] Turn off certificates validation

  1. Open the Finder.
  2. Open Keychain Access and click Preferences.
  3. Change Online Certificate Status Protocol (OSCSP) to Off.
  4. Change Certificate Revocation List (CRL) to Off.
  5. Restart the Mac and attempt to install Office again.
  6. Restore both settings to Best attempt after the Office installation is successful.
