Windows 10 upgrade basic troubleshooting steps

In this guide you will find several basic troubleshooting steps, that you can apply if you're experiencing issues during a Windows upgrade.

[Step 1] Check computer compability


  1. To find out if all hardware is supported in Windows 10, search on the manufacturer's website for the model that you're using.
  2. If the model is supported, make sure to update the BIOS, chipset, graphic & network drivers.

[Step 2] Check for file system & disk corruption


  1. Open the Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Execute Sfc /scannow
  3. Wait for the scan to finish.
  4. Execute Chkdsk /f
  5. Wait for the scan to finish.
  6. Execute Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  7. The DISM scan may take a while. The progress bar will stay at 0% for a while but it will eventually continue.

[Step 3] Perform a clean boot


  1. Open Run and execute Msconfig
  2. Open Services, select Hide all Microsoft services and click Disable all.
  3. Make sure to turn on network related drivers and select OK to save the changes.
  4. Restart the computer.

[Step 4] Uninstall antivirus & security software


  1. Open the Control Panel and click Programs.
  2. Open Programs & Features and uninstall all antivirus & security software.
  3. You can safely reinstall all antivirus & security software after the upgrade is finished.

[Step 5] Temporarily suspend Bitlocker

To temporarily suspend Bitlocker protection, apply the following steps:

  1. Open the Control Panel and click System and Security.
  2. Open System and Security and select BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  3. Select Suspend Protection for the operating system drive.

To resume Bitlocker protection, apply the following steps:

  1. Open the Control Panel and click System and Security.
  2. Open System and Security and select BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  3. Select Resume Protection for the operating system drive.

[Step 6] Start the upgrade process

Start the upgrade process again after applying all of the above steps. The upgrade should be able to finish this time.
