Word / Excel is not the default program


Software: Office 2010, 2013 & 2016 | Last modified on 2018-06-18


When attempting to open a Word or Excel file, an error appears stating that Word or Excel is not the default program to view or edit this file.

[Solution 1] Quick repair Office


  1. Open the Control Panel and click Programs.
  2. Open Programs and Features.
  3. Find and select the installed Office version and click Change.
  4. Select Quick Repair and click Repair.
  5. Attempt to open the file again after the process has finished.

[Solution 2] Change the default program


  1. Open the Control Panel and click Programs.
  2. Open Default Programs and select Set your default programs.
  3. Find and select the app you wish to set as default and click Set this program as default.
  4. There will be no confirmation window but a small message will appear above the button stating 'This program has all of its defaults.'

[Solution 3] Open the file within Word / Excel


  1. Open Word or Excel and click File.
  2. Click Open and select Browse.
  3. Find your file in the Windows Explorer and click Open.
